Lesson 8

Lights! Camera! Action!

L/O: To explore the use of mise-en-scene in films.

Mise-en-scene:
  • It is a French term meaning what is put into a scene or frame.
  • Visual information in front of the camera.
  • MES communicates essential information to the audience. Each aspect of mise-en-scene has hidden meanings within a film and sends signals to the audience about how we are supposed to feel or about a character.
Settings and props:
  • Settings & locations play an important part in film-making and are not just 'backgrounds'.
  • Sets are either built from scratch or a great deal of time is spent to find a setting which already exists.
  • Settings can manipulate an audience by building certain expectations and then taking a different turn.
Task: What settings, locations and props would you expect to find in:
  1. A Science Fiction Film - A lab with test tubes and different machinery as props
  2. A Romantic Comedy - In Paris or another romantic comedy and the props would be flowers.
  3. A Horror Film - In an abandoned building and use knives etc. as props
Costume, Hair & Make-Up:
  • Costume, Hair & Make-Up act as an instant indicator to us of a character's personality, status & job
  • It tells us immediately whether the film is set in the present and what society/or culture it will centre around.
  • Certain costumes can signify certain individuals (i.e. black cloak of a vampire, Spidey's Spiderman suit).
Task: What can you tell about the following characters from their costume, hair & make-up?
  1. They are very serious and may be an explorer of some sort
  2. A stereotypical teenage girl as she is wearing a lot of pink.
  3. They are also very serious, and look to be a stereotypical citizen and wearing quite casual clothing.

Lesson 5

Wednesday 6th May 2020

L/O : To explore the use of setting & colour in films.

Setting:
Why might a writer choose the following settings?

  • An isolated house in a rural setting for a horror film
It makes suspense and shows how the character will be lonely, making it more scary
  • A big city for an action film
Because there will be more stuff going on and it makes it more lively
  • A small seaside town for a romantic comedy
It makes it more personal and there isn't as much going on to make it more relaxed
  • A range of different countries for an action adventure film
To show the adventure within the film and there will be different things happening in each place to give it more interesting parts
  • A large modern science laboratory for a science-fiction film
Because it matches with the genre and gives them more space to do things about science.

Colour:
Why might a director choose the following colours?
Think about colour connotations and associations.
  • Blue and red for a new superhero costume
They might choose blue and red because they have both been associated with the different 'sides' of villains and superheros and red is used to show danger, maybe saying how the superhero would only be there to help in danger. Blue has connotations of trust, which is important for a superhero to be trusted by people to help them.
  • A black suit for a villain
They might choose black for a villain because it would be dark compared to the superhero's costume and brightness is closer to happiness and safety compared to dark colours. Black has connotations of fear and the unknown, which is normally also related to villains.
  • Bright colours for a comedy film
They would choose bright colours for a comedy film because brightness is quite happy and joyful compared to the darker colours maybe used in a horror film.

Setting & Colour:
Answer the following questions about your chosen film

1) Where does the action take place?
It takes place at Hogwarts (a school) and also the Gringotts bank which are both very big.

2) Why do you think the story is set in that particular place?
Because they are both large areas and it relates to the films before.

3) When and how does the setting change?
The setting changes when people start to be in danger and it changes by the main characters                 realising that someone might get hurt in a particular place.

4) How does the setting affect the characters and the way they behave?
They get more on edge and prepared to fight and protect themselves from what might happen.

5) How could you tell where the story was taking place?
Because there were shots of the setting itself and an explanation in the narrative itself.

6) Could the same story have happened in a different place? Why?
I don't think it could have because the settings lead on from other films and the narrative also              explains where they were going and why so it wouldn't have made sense if the characters went            somewhere different.

7) Why do you think certain colours are used?
I think certain colours are used to make the film seem dark and more mysterious for some points         because it would fit with the narrative.

8) Are any colours associated with particular characters? Why do you think this is?
All the characters have similar colours depending on how they were feeling or their mood. I think      this is to make the person watching feel what the characters were feeling easier.

9) How important do you think the colours are in the film?
I think they are quite important so that the audience knows how the characters are feeling and their      mood as the story goes on.

10) What would the film have been like in black or white or in just one colour?
I think it would have been very different and wouldn't have worked as well because it needs the           colour to help show what is happening and the importance of the scenes.

Explain and describe what settings and any specific colour choices you would to film the following film:

A science fiction film set 1000 years in the future. The main characters are a team of scientists who are struggling to find a cute for a deadly virus that is threatening to wipe out their world. The virus has been developed and released by another scientist who used to work with them but was sacked when they discovered he was testing his discoveries on innocent people.

I think that the colours would be quite dark to represent the theme of the film. I would set it in a science to lab to match the genre and to give them more resources to film it accurately.

Plenary:

Why do you think these settings and colours were used in the following shots?

I think these settings and colours were used in the following shots to show the light maybe being more powerful compared to the dark. They also just used the setting so it has space to have an action scene & a place the viewers would maybe recognise.

I think the colouring in this was made to be dark because it's mysterious and you wouldn't know what is going to happen next and it creates suspense. The setting is used to be busy so you can see the action that will happen but also to have a lot going on in the scene.

What happens in the beginning, middle and end of the story?

  • Beginning: Harry is at a park when Dudley comes up to him to start a fight and it starts storming, they run home but get caught by Dementors and Harry has to use a spell (which he isn't allowed to do) and gets expelled from Hogwarts. He goes to where everyone is staying and sees his friend and the Order of The Phoenix and his Godfather, Sirius Black. Mr. Weasley takes him to the Ministry of Magic where there is a meeting to see if Harry should be allowed to go back to Hogwarts again. Dumbledore comes to the meeting and manages to get Harry permission to go back.
  • Middle: The school is partly being run by Professor Umbridge who has very strict rules. she tries to get Dumbledore put into Azkaban as he is saying Voldemort is back and the Ministry don't want anyone to know, however Dumbledore escapes meaning Umbridge becomes the new Headmaster. Umbridge won't teach the children at Hogwarts any spells to defend themselves (practically) so Harry, Ron and Hermione set up 'Dumbledore's Army' where Harry teaches everyone to use different spells. Umbridge figures out that they have the Army but as they are hidden in the Room Of Requirement (the door only opens for those who need it), she can't find them. Eventually, they use a potion to make one of the members say where they are training and they all find out. Umbridge tells  Dumbledore that as he has an 'Army' (even though he didn't know it was happening) and he admits to it. They try to put him into Azkaban, however Dumbledore escapes meaning Umbridge becomes the new Headmaster. During the exam at the school, Fred and George set off magical fireworks in the hall and Umbridge runs away whilst everyone celebrates. Whilst celebrating, Harry gets a vision of something bad happening and they figure out he is connected to Voldemort.
  • End: Harry gets a vision of his Godfather Sirius black being tortured by Voldemort so he can give him Harry's prophecy. He tells his friends and they go with him to the Ministry of Magic to get his prophecy so the Death Eaters can't. When they get there, they find Harry's prophecy when Lucius Malfoy turns up and explains that it was a trick just so they could get the prophecy from him as only the person it is about can pick it up. Harry doesn't give it to him and they end up in a fight and going to a different room. The Death Eaters take his friends whilst Lucius again asks Harry for the prophecy, when the Order of The Phoenix turn up and fight. Sirius gets killed by Bellatrix and Harry chases her, leading him to a fight with Voldemort. Harry is almost killed when Dumbledore turns up to protect Harry and they make Voldemort leave (for a while at least)

How does the mise-en-scene promote Taylor Swift's image or status in the "Look What You Made Me Do" music video?
The mise-en-scene promotes the artist's image and status in the video as the bathtub is filled with the jewels showing how much money she has and how successful she is. She also has the dollar bill which represents the money she earned from winning a court case from being sexually assaulted. She didn't need the money but she didn't want the person getting away with it. They all represent of her wealth and power from her career.

How does the mise-en-scene create meaning for the audience?

  • P - Point: Taylor Swift's pop superstar celebrity image is promoted in her music through media language
  • E - Evidence: (e.g of costume, colour, lighting etc) For example, the costumes...
  • E - Explain: This suggests...
  • E - Expand: What else can you tell us about the video that backs up your point?
My Answer:
Taylor Swift was represented in many ways in the media and uses her different characters to show that. For example, the costumes showed the people she has been shown as. This suggests that she wants to be a different person from what the media has suggested she is and doesn't want anyone to believe her.
